June 26 Nonconformity: A Radical Christian View
Starting at the watershed moment of the Radical Reformation with the 16th century Anabaptists, we will take a brief tour of the radical side of Christianity. Not the radically violent and radically political, but rather the radically peaceful and radically just. From the Reformation we will look back to their inspiration and follow the thread of the New Testament up to Constantine and Augustine where Church weds State. Then, finally, the question of pacifism and politics today: does it have a place in contemporary American Christian dialog?
Our speaker is George Sawyer. who is a rogue scholar with broad interests, including the New Testament, Patristics, and the Radical Reformation. He holds a B.M. in Music History from Bowling Green State University and an M.Div. From Bethel Seminary. To support his academic habits George is the CEO of Sawyer Training, Inc., a small, familyowned technology training and software development business in Minneapolis. George has three children, has worked as a carny, lived on a houseboat on the Mississippi, and is currently experimenting with sustainable, lowtech living in an urban setting.
This talk will be preceded by the annual meeting and election of board members.
